Caused by Balloon **Exploding"

Considerable excitement caused shortly after ten p.m. yes- terday when a fire broke out 'at' Sookunpoo.

London, Aug. 28. Group Captain W. V. Strugnell, M.C., who has been appolated to command the R.A.F, Station, Man- ston, vice Group Captain E. R. Manning, M.C., retired, was born at South Stoneham in 1892. He served in the Royal Engineers as boy and sapper from 1907 until 1012, when he was transferred to the R.F.C. with the rank of ser- geant. He was one of the first N.C.Os to be trained to fly by the R.F.C. and his Royal Acro Cinb certificate (No. 253) is dated July 24, 1912, and marked Bristal biplane, Salisbury Plain.
He went to France with the R.C. in August, 1914, and in June, . 1915. was awarded a commission in The Hampshire Regiment and seconded to the RF.C. He became

flight commander. and was promoted temporary captain in February, 1916, and in June, 1916. he was awarded the Military Cross After six months' home service he returned to France in December. 1916, and in July, 1917. he was

The origin of the fire was due to a lighted lantern or balloon burst- ing overhead with the ultimate result that the candle on its down- ward motion ignited the infam- miable materiais used for the roofing.
