CITY DEVELOPMENT SCHEME TO BE LEFT IN ABEYANCE

That economy will be the key note of the Hong Kong Government for the year 1936 is the gist of the speech delivered, by the Colonial Secretary the Hon. Mr. N. L. Smith in introducing the Budget at the meeting of the Legislative Council held yesterday afternoon.

L

The Colonial Secretary stated that the original estimate of $30,585,650 and the revised estimate of $28,328.034 fell short of over $2 million of the 1935 figures, "The 1935 scale o taxes is continued unaltered in the Estimates now before the Council, except that it has been decided to forego rather more than half a million dollars of Revenue by reducing the charges for excess water," tinued Mr. Smith.

A

con-

No major public works would be undertaken hut those started during this year will be continued. The City Development Scheme will be left in abeyance while abolished vacancies which have occurred or are expected to occur will not be filled if it is considered in anyway possible to leave them unfilled without undue loss of efficiency. Land Sales are estimated to fall by one half in 1936.
