The length of time which elapsed between the receipt of the indent and the ordering of the envelopes was occasioned by (1) the intervention of the Easter holidays, and (2) great pressure of work. The time taken by the contractor was due to the unprecedented demands caused by the death of the Queen.

The date of the requisition is 21st November, 1898, not as stated, 25th.October, 1898. It is for the following articles :-
'One ship's masthead lantern to show green through 260° of the horizon, and so constructed that it will burn steadily in the open air both during calms and gales; base of lantern to have four brass flanges, so that it may be screwed down to a platform on top of roof.
"Lamp to have duplex burner, and so constructed that it can be detached from lantern underneath and taken through roof for trimming.
One spare lamp to be supplied, and also spare wicks, &c., &c."

We do not appear to have wasted any time over this order, and the contractors delivered to date. The paint was unavoidably detained till the 3rd August, as there was no other opportunity of shipment. The date of arrival in the Colony is given as "September," but if so, it must have been very early in that month.
