THE RESIDENT COMMISSIONER to THE HIGH COMMISSIONER. (Received in Colonial Office, 13th August, 1914.) (New Hebrides. No. 242/14.)

British Residency, Vila, 18th June, 1914. WITH reference to the Circular despatch of the Secretary of State for the Colonies, of the 20th December, 1910,* and Your Excellency's No. 69, of the 20th March last, I have the honour to forward herewith a statement giving as far as possible the information asked for in the annexure to Sir Ronald Ross's note of 6th November, 1910, which formed an enclosure to the first mentioned communication. The figures in regard to hospitals have been supplied by the Medical Officers in charge of the John G. Paton and French Government hospitals in Vila; consequently, although occasional cases are brought from the other islands, the statistics may be said to be almost entirely in respect of the Island of Efate, which has a population of about three thousand, native and European, the number of the latter amounting to about fourteen per cent. of the whole.

"

For the hospitals on Ambrym and Tanna I regret that I am unable to supply any particulars. All the records of the Ambrym institution were destroyed with the hospital during the volcanic outbreak in December last, while that on Tanna has been closed since the beginning of the year.

have, &c.,

M. KING,

Resident Commissioner.
