3. The reports* of investigations carried on in the Government laboratories in Ceylon, Hong Kong, Jamaica, and the Malay States were received. It was agreed that the reports from Ceylon, Jamaica, and the Malay States were full and interesting. The question of vomiting sickness in Jamaica was mentioned, but it was agreed that, as the researches of Captain Potter and Dr. Seidelin had failed to establish definitely the nature of the disease, nothing further could be done at present. In the case of the Malay States it was agreed that the suggestion made by Dr. Framer that an international committee. composed of the various investigators who have worked on leprosy, should be organized, was not at present practicable, but that the report itself should be commended as full and valuable.

4. The statisticst of mosquito-borne diseases from Hong Kong, the Leeward Islands, the Windward Islands, Uganda, South Africa, and the Solomon Islands were received. It was agreed that special attention should be called to the Hong Kong report as being carefully prepared.

5. The question of the compulsory treatment of persons suffering from yawS in Jamaica was considered. Attention was called to the expression of opinion by Dr. Edwards against compulsion and to the absence of any evidence that the mode It was agreed that the of treating the disease voluntarily had proved a failure. method of treatment by salvarsan, except in the case of intravenous injection, which required special care, was reasonably safe, but the Committee were of opinion that if the voluntary system was working well, and no evidence to the contrary had been laid before them, then the adoption of compulsion was not necessary. They desired, however, to recommend strongly the adoption of the proposal for the provision of travelling dispensaries.

6. The requests of the University of London for an increase of the grant made It was agreed that from the Tropical Diseases Research Fund was considered. Dr. Woodcock, whose remuneration was only £200 a year, was much underpaid, but Mr. Read raised the question whether the position of the fund was such as to justify extra expenditure, and he pointed out that, when the grant of £750 a year was originally made for the Professor of Protozoology, stress had been laid on the fact that the Professor would undertake research work and probably go abroad for the purpose.

Sir John Rose Bradford, who explained the circumstances in which the grant had first been made (namely, the relinquishment by the Royal Society of £500 a year, which it had been agreed to allot to it for scientific research, and the grant of an extra sum of £200 (since discontinued) by the Rhodes Trustees), agreed that the original idea of the Professor carrying on research work abroad had not been fulfilled, but he laid stress on the fact that the educational work which he was He doing was of the highest importance and value in training protozoologists. also pointed out that, if the existing arrangements as regards the Lister Institute were to be changed, the whole position of the Professor might require reconsidera- tion. It was eventually decided, after further discussion, that the grant of £100 should be made for 1914 if, and when, the subscription from the Government of India, which has not yet been paid, became available.
