Memorandum from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to H. B. M. Embassy

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs present their complimenta to H.3.4. Embassy and, with reference to the Ministry' a memorandum No. Vai (37) Ou I 08628 of the 12th April 1948 and the Embassy's Note ro. 156 of the 5th April regarding the request that duty be waived on the necessary replacements imported by H. B.M. Consulate General, British nationals and British firms at shancen, Janton, have the honour to refer to Vice Zininter Liu Shik-chun'a personal expression of concern about this matter to Er. Læsh, Minister of H... baery, on the 8th April. The Ministry /have the honour to state that they have approached the competent Authorities and have now obtained their approval for a special concession whereby replacements required by British nationals and firas at Shameen, Cantou, may be taported duty free. The Ministry further hope that the Baid british nationals and firms will make out a detailed table giving the names and amounts of the replacements they require to import and forward it for certification by the basoy and onward transmission

to the Ministry so that it may be referred to the local Customs, who will, on the basis of an import permit applied for and obtained in accordance with the law by the said British nationale and firms, release the goods after examination without payment of duty. This will, Eowever, be allowed once only. The Ministry have the honour to request the Embassy to instruct all British nationals and firms at Shaneen, Canton, who es the result of loesen suffered in the incident on the 16th January require to import replacements that they should after obtaining an import verait from the competent authorities in accordance with the procedure laid down by law, make out a detailed table giving the namen and amounts of the replacements they require to import and send it to the Embassy for transmission to the Vinistry so that the Ministry may refer it to the competent authorities for wetion,
