Irritation of these parasites in the alimentary canal. On the whole a more healthy year than 1856 I have not met with during my sojourn in Hong Kong. Having given a very short summary of the chief diseases of the Colony, I must again refer to my reports for the years 1854, 1855, wherein I confined myself to sanitary measures, namely—sewerage, drainage, ventilation and cleanliness—and to which most essential and most important topics but very slight attention has been paid.
I must, I again regret to say, refer to the latter requisite of my Report for 1854, that the sanitary measures Nos. 1, 2, 3, 4 have not been attended to in the

slightest, and two years having now elapsed, I fear they never will be.
Jail. This establishment is still defective in most essential heads, namely Discipline and Authority. Both must continue unless the Jailer and Turnkeys are invested with more of the latter. The Jailor is certainly most willing, so far as lies in his power, to make everything within the walls effective. It is much to be regretted that he has such a distance to walk to the Jail, in lieu of a communicating way from his own House to the Gaol. This, however, is said to be under contemplation.
