and more suitable part of the Jail, is still in existence and causing much annoyance to Prisoners in their cells and to the Turnkeys in their Dwelling; when it is to be removed, it is hard to say, but still it is under contemplation. In my last Report I said that the Jail required enlargement and I say so Still. The Gaol is capable of holding about 190 Prisoners, yet have I seen 360 Prisoners within its walls; upon this subject have I repeatedly spoken, but it appears without the slightest effect. Since last Report, happy to say, has been set apart, as an Hospital for the Chinese Prisoners, a Room … it is ample and sufficiently commodious and well supplied with the necessary conveniences.
At the back of the Infirmary is a very large room capable of containing about 70 men and the Room beneath is equally as large. In a corner of the upper room is placed an urinal communicating with the Lower Room and having no pit for the urine passing through it; that (a corner) of consequence is about 12 feet. The lower room is daily flooded and the Stench and Malaria arising therefrom is in my humble opinion quite sufficient for the cause of Disease of the most Infectious character.
