The widening of this Road I hope will be effected at no distant period to render it available for wheeled carriages, and upon this occasion stone will be placed upon the present abutments which were made sufficiently strong to provide for such. In the Iron Bridge of Aberdeen Sunday repairs have been effected at a charge of £5.4.2; further improvements are in course of execution under Report and Estimate No 21 of 1847 in connection with the extension of the Road to Stanley to complete the circuit of the Island. The Aberdeen Police Station, Report 2nd Estimate No 6 of 1866 has progressed but slowly during the year; but this has been caused firstly by the insolvency of the Contractor, secondly amongst the workmen no less than 11 died, together with two European Overseers; this deterred both Contractor and men from living on the ground; now however it is healthy enough, and the Building I hope will be fit for occupation in a few days. It is exceedingly difficult to deal with the Chinamen when the work is being carried on at such a distance (4 miles from Victoria); for without almost a daily visit from the Clerk of Works, which would be impossible, they will not hurry or execute it with that degree of satisfaction requisite; thus frequently considerable portions of the building were condemned, and at other times portions of work were neglected during its progress which could not be remedied to conform to the specification, much of this however excepted during the sickness or absence of the Foreman the work has been very well executed altogether fitting for site of Church and Government Offices. This work is not yet completed inasmuch as relates to the sloping the Banks and approaches, etc.
