Debtor's Gaol. A new floor has been placed in this building during the year, six inches above the ground. It was raised to effect better ventilation than before.

Gaols. The three Buildings composing Gaol together with the Magistracy have been completed for a considerable time but sundry works are yet unfinished, such as the Begagon Police Towers, the Well, etc. these however together with the boundary walls are approaching completion, which will render the whole very serviceable.

Further additional works have been proposed to provide for increased accommodation required, there have however not been sanctioned or commenced yet. It was considered during the last hot season that a greater degree of ventilation was requisite, as the wards were filled in some cases with twice the number of men they were calculated for. This was effected by cutting out doors to add to the supply of fresh air, iron gratings were inserted therein and found very effective and I am led to believe that the Prisoners experienced a more than usual degree of health, in fact I am not aware that any one prisoner has died from actual sickness since they have been in the new Buildings and this notwithstanding they were obliged to be placed therein before the plaster was dry.

The Police Station Butterfield's Bazaar was unfinished during the year, Report and Estimate No. 4 of 1846, total expenditure £692.3.3. This building as well as all the other Police Stations are the property of Government and have more inmates than they were intended to hold, but I believe they have been found to be very healthy, and the sickness amongst Police is not nearly so great as that to be found in the Military.

The Colonial Church is progressing very satisfactorily and I trust will give that degree of satisfaction when finished the Public look for a work of the kind. It is however, hard to please...
