In fact, as far as bridges are concerned, I do not imagine they require repair except perhaps to parapet walls which are liable to injury from various causes.
Old Road to Tytane. This Road, at a distance of 3 1/2 miles, has remained during the Year in a better state of repair than I ever remember it, which is attributable to frequent attention to the drains and clearing the channels after rains; many parts of this line are so exceedingly steep that it is impossible to preserve the surface without paving it to prevent injury and this could not be done as horses would inevitably slip upon it. These parts have, as much as possible, been repaired with broken stone where it has been practicable to procure it. The expenditure during the year has amounted to £37.12.11. on about 11d. per yard, the width of this path is only five feet, half of that of the Roads from Saiwan to Tytane.
The Aberdeen Road extends a distance of 4 1/2 miles from the Naval Stores to the Town of Morken. On this line the surface repairs have been very slight indeed, the expenditure being £22.18.14. or less than 6d. per yard and one half of this distance. The Road is fifteen feet wide. The Bridges here, as on the Saiwan and Tytam Road, are built of timber resting on stone abutments; here also the white ant has begun its ravages, but during the Year the expenditure for Bridges only amounted to £4.5.2; the expenditure subsequently to the 31st December, however, has been upwards of £20. I hope the measures I have lately adopted will tend materially to retard these destructive insects; but I fear that in such exposed situations and where the facilities for collecting materials under cover of which they commit their depredations are great, it will be...
