were laid down in November and in December the external and internal walls were built to a height of 11'-6". They were successfully launched on the 28th December and towed to Causeway Bay for completion before being placed in position at Jubilee Street and Jordan Road.

NEW GAOL at Stanley,

Gaol Buildings:- This work was referred to in paragraph 234 of last year's Report. The main contract for most of the prison buildings, boundary wall, surfacing and drainage was signed on 14th January, 1935, and by the end of the year the boundary wall was completed and all of the buildings were up to roof level. In October tenders were called for the remainder of the prison buildings which included the Printing Shop, Bath House, Laundry, Assembly Hall, Covered yard, Garages and Transformer House and that of Messrs. Tung Shan & Co.'s tender amounting to $499,885.10 was accepted and the contract signed on the 7th November, 1935. Good progress has been made with both of these contracts during the year. Tenders were obtained for heating and hot water service to the prison buildings and that of Messrs. Haden & Sons Ltd. tender amounting to £4,460 plus $4,870 was accepted and signed on 29th November, 1935.

210. European Staff Quarters:- These Quarters comprise a detached house for the Superintendent of Prisons, a pair of semi-detached houses for the Assistant Superintendent and Medical Officer and a total of thirty-nine flats for the Subordinate European Staff of which eighteen are of four rooms and twenty-one of three rooms. In addition a Hostel for fifteen unmarried warders is being erected.

Sketch plans were prepared and approved in the early part of the year and working drawings were subsequently prepared and tenders obtained for the flats and hostel for the subordinate staff. The tender of Messrs. Tak Hing & Co. was accepted and a contract signed in October. Satisfactory progress was made and at the end of the year the buildings had reached an average height of about five feet above the ground floor level.

Working drawings were completed for the three houses for senior officers and at the end of the year tenders were being obtained.

211. Indian and Chinese Staff Quarters:- The accommodation provided under this head as follows- ninety-two two-roomed tenements for married Indians and thirty for married Chinese together with barrack accommodation for 100 unmarried Indians and twenty unmarried Chinese. This accommodation is contained in eight blocks of buildings arranged on the lower ground near the sea.
