pipe at the other thus forming a double ended flanged length of 100 feet approximately. The flanges, which were of special design, were of cast steel one of each pair being male and the other female. A rubber jointing ring was used between the successive lengths of pipe, the joint being secured by twelve 1 1/2″ diameter steel bolts. Flanged flexible steel ball and socket joints, having an angular travel of 7° in any direction from centre line, were used to provide for any change of line and gradient of the pipe line and were spaced generally about 300 feet apart.
To provide for expansion and contraction due to temperature and settlement, special expansion joints having a travel of 12″ were used about every 600 feet in the pipe line.
The heavy concrete anchor blocks and piles provided to prevent lateral movement of the existing 12" pipe were utilized for a similar purpose on the new 18" pipe.
A junction with the existing 24" land and 12" harbour pipes was made immediately south of the automatic recorder house at the Kowloon end of the pipe line. A new 12" sluice valve and an air cock were provided on the new pipe at this point, enabling either or both of the old and new harbour pipes to be used as required.
At the Hong Kong end an air cock, Reflux Valve, 12″ Washout Valve and 12″ Sluice Valve were fixed and a junction was made with the existing 24" land and 12" harbour pipes at Queen's Pier.
The total length of the pipe line from the seawall at Kowloon to the seawall at Hong Kong is 5,914 lineal feet.
The Valves and Flexible Ball and Socket joints were supplied through the Crown Agents by Messrs. Glenfield & Kennedy and Messrs. Blakeborough respectively. The contract for the supply of pipe work and for fabricating the short pipes into long lengths was carried out by Messrs. Hume Pipe Far East Ltd. The contractors for laying the pipe line were Messrs. Netherlands Harbour Works Co., Hong Kong.
