office on the first floor. A latrine block was provided apart from the main building. A contract was let to Messrs. Li Ng & Co. and was signed on the 2nd May, 1934. Progress was very slow and unsatisfactory and by the middle of November work was practically at a standstill. On the 1st December the work was taken out of the Contractors' hands and a contract was let for the completion of the building to Messrs. Hop Shing & Co. and was signed on the 24th December. The reinforced concrete skeleton and floors, and most of the brick panelling to ground and first floors was completed by the end of the year.

GENERAL WORKS.
112. Roads :--Consequent upon the erection of new buildings, kerbing and channelling operations were executed on twenty-three roads, etc., the footpaths were paved, scavenging lanes surfaced with cement concrete, and any necessary alterations in levels or alignment effected.

113. Drainage :-(a) Training
Training Nullahs-Nullah parapet walling was constructed at Ming Yuen Nullah, North Point for a length of 814 feet and at Smithfield for a length of 119 feet. Alterations, small extensions and repairs were carried out to trained stream-courses in Aberdeen Valley in vicinity of the New Government House Site. Open channels varying in size from 36″ to 9″ were constructed to a length of 334 feet.

(b) Miscellaneous Drainage Works.-New sewers and storm water drains to a length of 8,793 feet and varying from 27″ to 4" in diameter were constructed during the year principally at North Point, Tai Hang Road, Praya East, Magazine Gap Road, Barker Road and at Mount Cameron. Manhole and gully covers were renewed in the Western District chiefly on the bus routes. The number of drain connections made was 108.

Miscellaneous:-The following works were carried out under this head:-Post Office Building-extension to counter grilles, Queen's College-provided nine small cupboards, Gough Hill Police Station-covered way between kitchen and quarters, 410 The Peak-levelled and surfaced area around tennis courts, Aberdeen Market-alterations to stalls, May Road Playground-levelled and surfaced, Lockhart Road Market levelled adjacent area, Government Offices at 18 Johnston Road-erected wood and malthoid roof as car shelter, also covered main roof with Canton tiles and patent roofing, Kuhlan Memorial-removed from Wanchai to Happy Valley, No. 7
