146. New Principal Water Mains in the City of Victoria.— During the past few years the City consumption has increased greatly, and the existing principal mains were found to be inadequate to maintain a full supply during the Summer months. It was, therefore, decided to lay a 15" Cast Iron Main throughout the Central and Eastern Districts of the City. The portion from Jardine's Bazaar to Tin Lok Lane has been laid and put into operation, and a further 1½ miles of 15″ C. I. pipes have been received from England. Owing to pressure of other work it was not possible to lay them by the end of the year. A 6" main 3,400 lin. feet was laid in Wongneichong Road round the East side of Happy Valley.
A temporary Cast Iron main, partly 10" and partly 12" in diameter, was laid from the Monument at Happy Valley to the Praya at Bowrington via Canal Road West, a distance of 2,090 feet.
This main will remain in use until the removal of Morrison Hill is effected when the permanent 18″ C. I. main will be laid on the new alignment.
