9.
Look-out" at F.C's. Post.—A
look-out " will be on duty at the F.C. post by night and day. His duty will be to report at once to the officer any vessel of unusual appearance approaching the harbour. He will also keep up the log book, in which should be entered the name, type, nationality, time of entering or leaving the harbour of every vessel.
10. Duties of P.F. Specialists and Telephonists.--P.F. specialists and telephonists are entirely responsible for the safeguarding of their instruments, and will always remain by night at their stations. They are not required for guard duties.
There must always be a telephonist on duty at Pottinger Battery, who will be in communication with the port war signal station by telephone. Telephonists should have a private code signal to prevent any chance of the instruments being used by the enemy for their own purposes.
11. Preparation for Action.--The guns will at all times be kept ready for action, and a sufficient amount of ammunition should therefore be brought up from the magazines and placed in the cartridge and shell recesses, but shell will not be fuzed unless an attack is imminent.
12. Daily Drill. - Battery mannings should be daily practised, and men and officers practised in the scheme of defence of the command. The command communi- cations, both by signal and telephone, should also be daily tested.
13. Reports to F.C.-The following subjects should be put into form of a short report, and submitted through you to the F.C. daily :
(a.) State of communication by telephone throughout the Eastern Fire Command, including the alarm circuit, and those with Headquarters and P.W.S.S.
(b.) Any deficiencies of any sort which it is important to bring to notice.
(c.) Progress of further improving the defences of forts and P.F. cells, as laid down in Defence Scheme and fighting books.
14. Maxims. You will make arrangements to hand over to the O.C., Island Section, those Maxims which are held on charge for the infantry defence, together with such ammunition as may be required.
15. Movable Armament Guns.-Unless otherwise ordered, you will arrange to move 4-15-pr. guns with filled limbers (together with 50 rounds of ammunition per piece, including that in the limbers) to Tytam Gap, where they will come under the orders of the Island Section Commander.
The balance of this ammunition not in the limbers will be kept at Tytam Gap, protected by tarpaulins.
16. Drawing Ordnance Stores.—You will arrange to draw stores from the ordnance as laid down in Table of Mobilization Stores, Defence Scheme, copies of vouchers being held by you.
17. Copy of Orders in Fort Record Books.-A copy of these instructions should be placed in the fort record books of all batteries, and should there be any local considera- tions which have not been dealt with herein (i.e., examination services, &c.), full instructions should be added in the fort record book of the battery concerned to meet them.
18. Infantry, R.E. and R.A.M.C.-The following reports on arrival and during mobilization will be sent to me by infantry, R E. and R.A.M.C.:-
(1.) Arrival report. (2.) Daily state.
You will make the necessary arrangements for the accommodation (in barracks only) of the above details.
You will arrange personally with the O.C. R A.M.C, details all such questions as increased accommodation for latrines, time and place for sick to be inspected (war period).
You will arrange for night exercises to be carried out in conjunction with the O.C.
