Brake Noise-Squealing. This unpleasant feature is. caused, in general, by the vibration of drums when the brakes are applied. Some drums acoustically better designed than others to communicate vibration to the surrounding air, i.e., drums that have no flange at the open end. In such case a stout metal; band camped round the outside of the drum will alter the natural period of vibration, and is an un- falling remedy.
Where squealing is intermittent, and not persistent (it may occur during and after wet weather) here the cause is, in the majority of instances, an abnormal rise in the co-efficient of friction due either to the entry of grit or the formation of gust on the working surfaces of the pressing the foot) pedal down sufficiently to engage the brakes, and holding the pedal down with a stout piece of wood between the toe plate and the driver's seat. In this position of the pedal it should be possible to turn all four wheels one at a time by a strong pull on the tyres, and slacking off or tightening up the adjusting screws until it requires approximately the same force to move each wheel through one re- volution. The car can then bei taken out on the road and run, preferably down' hill, with the brakes hard.on for about 100 yards. The power of the respec- tive brakes can then be ascertained by the temperature of the outside of the brake drums. If the brakes are all equally effective there; should be no appreciable difference In temperature between any of the drums, but if one feels hotter) than the other that particular pair of shoes can be slacked off slight- ly, or alternatively, the other three may be adjusted

When to Reline Brakes. With normal usage, a set of good quality brake linings as fitted to touring cars should last at least 16 months for an average mileage of 1,000 per month. This, obvious- ly, is satisfactory service, and even if the linings are not worn right out, it is advisable to renew them when they are reduced to a thickness of 1/16 inch at the centre of the shoes-where always the greatest wear takes place. Therefore, even should the braking power be quite satisfactory, it is advisable to examine the linings for wear at certain intervals, say every three months after the first six months running-that is, if the car is in regular use. Apart from anything else, the examina- tion gives an opportunity of clear- ing out the drums, and it is sur-
