The invention, that of a young of arrival, traffic density, and which Yale professor, through an in-car should have the right-of-way. genious electrical hookup, is said to regulate traffic, much more ef- ficiently than police officers or or dinary timed traffic lights.

Operated electro-magnetically, this device operates a system of traffic lights with what resembles careful thinking. If the light is in favour of thoroughfure traffic and a car on a side street wishes to cross, the light gives it the op portunity at the first break in the thoroughfare traffic. If no traf- fie is on the main street, the car on the side street finds the light in

its favour.

A single ear approaching the light receives the green signal im- mediately. If two pass over the "eyes" simultaneously, one is given the Fight-of-way and the 5ther remembered, receiving the green light as soon as the first car has passed.

In addition to motor cars, the into consideration light takes street car and pedestrian traffic. Special overhead attachments are. connected to control trolley traffic. Pedestrians have the same oppor- tunity to cross as the ears going

WHEN BETTER AUTOMOBILES ARE BUILT ; : BUICK WILL BUILD THEM.

[By James Dunn.]

Sleep to the weary traveller is possible everywhere in peaceful England except in the cathedral city of Winchester.

The main road from London to Southampton passes through the heart of the city and turns in a wicked bend of a narrow street past the hotel quarter known as the place of insomnia.

Throughout the night and well into the small hours a procession of motor-cars blaze a roaring trail through the narrow street, with a grinding of gears and a groan- ing of horns that transform the cathedral calm of Winchester into a eity of dreadful din.

ΟΠ

Hundreds of nightmares wheels, from steam-lorries tu motor-bicycles, roaring, scream- ing, shrieking, wailing, groaning like a horde of evil spirits let loose in the land of sleep. They come in fire and fury these wheeled noises of the night. Their head- lights send lightning Dashes through the darkened rooms, their engines bring thunder into the Isacred silence.

Through undasy dreams it comes, the terror that drives by night, bringing savage jungle voices from the wild. The savage roar of the thwarted tiger, the trumpetings of the angry elephant, the defiant vell of the hyena, the frenzied scream of the wild cat, the awful shrieking of the striken boar.

Noise incarnate. The very houses tremble in the hellish din.) The weary stranger shudders and shivers under the bedclothes suf- fering the noise that is, dreading the noise, to come. That is the torture the uncertainty of the next voice. After two or three hours of howlings, moanings, shriekings, and groanings, the tinkle of a passing bicycle bell will make the victim leap in the air with agony.

Ears and nerves

are strained beyond endurance. Ancient Egypt never knew the plague of noise. Midnight! One o'clock! Two o'clock! Still comes the terror that rides by night, beginning in the distance with the sound of a mighty wind and then roaring, blazing, grinding, and shrieking away into the blackness beyond.

They say that a new road is to be made to escape the city of Winchester. It will be either that or a new cemetery.
