ALLEGED CONSPIRACY CHARGE.

Loudan, Dec. 14.

Enever and Bennett and staa Leslie Einst Haynes were charged to-day at Westminster Police Court with conspiracy with others to cheat persona, who could be induced to invest money in Humphry and Denman Ca,

M

Counsel for the Crown, in outlining the case, said that the Cam- pany dealt in a number of subsidiary coners, supposedly interested in mines in China. These included the Hengchow Company, register- ed in 1920, with a capital of £50,000.

The Hengchow Company entered into an agreement with a Mr. Grant, a mining engineer, whereby tirant sold to the Company certain rights and interests. Grant said he has a number of fully paid up shares. Their face value, however, was only £56. As far as Counsel knew, this was the only property of the Hengrhow Company in China. The firm of Humphry and Denman was registered in 1918, and, as far as Counsel know, did nothing. Humphry and Danman were the sole directors and shareholders till the end of 1921, when they appear- ed to have resigned. They were succeeded by the Enever Me Cartney Company. The latter entered into an agreement with the Hengehow Company, whereby they took over fifty shares in the Hengehow Com- pany for £50,000, and agreed to take up a further nity when repre- mines. sentatives of the Companies arrived in China to verify the Subsequently advertisements appeared in the papers, inviting prople two to úve to take up positions of trust in the Far East, to invest thousand sterling uni teeive salary and commission.

Lieut-General Sir Charles Kavanagh answered the advertise. ment. He agreed to ga to China to verify the Company's title to the mincs. Enever gave him £250 as expenses and Sir Charles paid

shares. Sir Charlis Kavanagh went £250 for a number of

Others had invited large sums, of which the accused drew some $25 The case was adiurned, bull teine grunted in £1,000 for ener If the accused.

THE BOXER INDEMNITY.

Londo, Dec. 14.

The Times gives prominence to a despatch from its Peking for respondent, strongly urging the British Government to remit its share of the Boxer Indemnity and devote it to Cinese education.

The correspondent d.clares it is impossible for Britain to restinbe and take what the United States, France and Japan are relinquishing.. The acrifice will be triting compared to what we vainly pond elea- where, because plainly we can do good with the money to ourselves and others.
