TURKEY CLIMBS DOWN.

Promises to Join League of Nations.

MR. CHILD INTERVENES.

(Reuter's Service.)

Lausanne, December 14. This morning's meeting of the minoritias sub-commission had a satisfactory result. Lord Curzon's strong attitude toward the Turks completely altered their standpoint, and they definitely promised to join the League of Nations. Lord Curzon expressed his pleasure, and the chief delegates them left the sub-commission to continue its work.

American Intervention.

Lausanne, December 14.

At the conclusion of the minorities rammission meeting yester- day evening, there were very active efforts to prevent rupture, with much coming and going of British, French and Italisa delegatesį till past midnight. Perhaps the most important intervention was by the American, Mr. Child, who had a long conversation with Ismet Pasha, whom he strongly advised to be more conciliatory. Ismat was very reticent and non-committal, but the efficacy of Mr. Child's) arguments towards settling the minorities question was proved by: the Turkish promise to-day, cabled earlier.
