WATER POWER IN CANADA. Further evidence of the impor- tance of the hydro-electric field in Canada is shown in the following extract taken from a recent report Hissued by the Water Power
Branch of the Department of the Interior. The water power now developed in Canada represents an investment of $530,000,000. In 1940, should the rate of growth of lastallation during the past 15 years be continued, this invest- ment will have grown to over $1,000,000,000. The present devel
annual opment represents an equivalent of 20,500,000 tors of coal, which, valued at eight dollars per ton, represents $164,000,000.. In the yast 1940 the annual figures will, with foregoing as- sumption, have becoms 42,000,000 tons, and $336,000,000. Natura the bas generously endowed Province of Quebec with water- powers.
After investigation the Department of Lands and Forests estimates that the gross water power of the rivers of this Pro- vince is probably nearly 15,000,060 horsepower.

Customs receipts for the whole of Norway during the month of April amounted to 8,718,855 kr, as compared with 6,730,205 kr in April, 1921, and 13,681,491 kr in (the same month of 1920. During the first ten months of the budget
1921-1922 the receipts amounted to 59.192.490 kr. as compared with 67,614 800 kr and 116,194,938 kr during the corres panding periods of 1920-21 and 1919-20 respectively. The esti- males for the budget period 1921- 22 is 65 million kroner, as com- pared with 80 million kroner for 1920-21 and 90 million kroner for 1919-20.
