COMMERCIAL NEWS.

THE "TEXTILE" EIDUSTRY OF

SHANGHAI

The cotton manufacturing ins dustry in Shanghai is developing rapidly. It is reported that the number of factories has increased from 41 to 80 during the last four years. Last December the num- ber of spindlers <were increased Ito 8,000,000; Owing to the failure of the Chinese cotton crop of last yrar, the business conditions were not so favourablo na waa jexpeated.

AUSTRALIAN WHEAT COMMITTEE-

Although the operations of the Australian Wheat Committee officially terminated on Decem- ber 31, the work of completing the accounts, will occupy COR- sidarable time, states a London message. Grain traders generally express great satisfaction with the why in which the committee in the past six years has marksi- ed Australian wheat, which has been sold to much greater advan- tsge than any of other whest- selling countries. The com- mitteo's work last year, during which it sold three million tons, has been greatly assisted by baving the chartering in its own hands.

COTTON FOR CHINA.

During the first twenty days of last month, Osaks exportd to Chios Y2,286,000 worth of cotton yarn and Y6,251,000 worth of cotton piecegoods for the old- style New Year sales. These igures show decrease of Y1,770,- 000 in cotton

yarn and of | V4,141,000 in cotton piec goda 3 compared with the record scored for the corresponding period of last year. The rapid decrease in exports is of course. ascribable to the decline in silver having lessened the purchasing power of Chinese merchants, but is at the same time no less due to the fact, it is considered, that every part of that country has copious stocks on account of ex- cessive purchases being made in October and November of last year in anticipation of the current year. While passing a resolution against the operation of the proposed Anglo-Indian preferen- tial Customs tariff at a general meeting recently held, the Dai Nippon Commmercial Guilds' Federation tas commenced a movement for getting it either suspended or amended, fearing that Osaka; which is the biggest port for the export of cotton yarn and cloth to India, will suffer erious losses. The saka Jiji does not venture to gneas What margin that preferential tariff will maintain between British and other goods, but notes certain expert as observing that the tariff will work st the rate of one to Britain sot three, to other countries. Osaka'i Indian trade, which is about 80 per cent. of Japan's whole Indian trade, shows exports and imports to and from Indis during the past four years as follow
