NEW YORK CONFERENCE. The Jiji reports the completion of a New York-Oriental Shipping Conference. as advocated in America since the spring of last Jear. At one time rapid progress Was being made towards the Conference being formed, but is failed in the end, because one of two Japanese shipping companies introduced some exceptions as to freights and insurance as a COO. dition of their participating in it, and also as British shipowners took an ambiguous attitude. The visit to America of Mr. Mateokate Kojiro, the President of the Kot. usai Kisen Kaisha, at the end of last year, has brought the question to the fore again, and on the 13th.instant the Conference was concluded between Amer- ican, British, and Japanese ship- OWOCIS. PURCHASE OF EUROPEAN SHIPS. The steamers that were bought from England, Norway, etc. by Japsasse shipowners in the last two or three months of 1921 have been attracting the attention of Japanese shipbuilders and ship-" owners. There are about thirty vessels, which total 170,000 to 180.000 tons, of which 30,000 to 40,000 tons have already been delivered to the buyers, the r mainder being expected to arrive in February and March. The ships are not very old, having some fourteen or fifteen years' service, and were purchased at Y35 to Y40 per ton in Japanese currency. If the import duty, repair expenses, etc. are included. they cost bardly Y60 per ton. while Japaness ships comparable with them come to YI per ton. other work than to build ferry- steamers for the Shikoku-Sanyo service or for the Aomori- Hakodate service, and to repair vessels. For middle-sized freighters, which Ware most attractive during the war, orders | have suddenly stopped altogether. The question then raised is how so many merchantmes, totalling nearly 200,000 tons, will be dealt with. Some of them will probably. find service in the shipment of North American timber, Rangoon rice, etc. while others will share in the transportation, of timber from the Hokkaidosod been-sate From Dairin. In March and April, the ̈movainent of freights will display a certain degree of sotivity, but hardly wallsing ko employ all the ships bought... Accordingly, an excess of ships and decline in freight rates will certainly ensue.
