AMERICAN MISSION. TO CHITA.
A telegram from Chita gives the gist of an interview with Messrs. Abbott and Davis, of the Chita American Mission in Colonel Davja stated to the cor- respondent of the agency that members of the Mission were greatly impressed by the hearty welcome by the Chita Govern- msat at Verkhne-Udinsk. "Be sides a cordial reception," said Colonel Davis, “I feel obliged to state that the Mission WAS_ given complete liberty to got acquainted with the political, economic and social life in the Republic. Wa spent our time to great advantage for the com- plation of our mission which consists in making a detailed report on the conditions in the Far Eastern Republic. We became convinced of the falsity of the information concerning the state of affairs in the F. E. Re- public by the Eastern Frers. When in China we received

reports of risings in Chita, stating that the Government had left Chita, etc, and other inventions. We are now well acquainted with the real conditions in the Far Eastern Republic sod this acquaintance will help to strengthen the friendly relations between the United States and the Far Eastern Republic. BRITISH FIRM'S SUCCESS. IN AUSTRALIA.
A Melbourne message says The Electricity Commissioners for the Victorian Government have accepted a tender of Messrs. Milliken Brothers, of London, for the complete manu- facture in the United Kingdom and for the delivery at the port of shipment of 643 towers of galvanized steel for the main transmission line of the Morwell amount, power scheme. The £72,838, is £23,250 below that lowest Australian offers. Mr. Robert S. Whiting, a pastoralist controlling chiefly Queensland properties, has told the Federal Taxation Commission in Sydney that last year he paid £25,000 in Federal and £10,000 in State - come-tax. He said that it was extravagant taxation which was preventing the development of the interior and was cutting the country's throat. The Morwell brown coal scheme, which was started five years ago, is intended part to supply coal and briquettes.and in part to supply electrical
power. The whole scheme is expected to cost about
9,000.000.
