THE CROCCH BUOY.

The familiar breeches buoy has been instrumental in saving many lives where vessela have boen stranded, but the difficulty |in getting a line from the ship to shore has sometimes proved dis astrous. A new line-carrying booy, the invention of W. S. Crouch, which recently-passed a successful test, is expected to go

far toward overcoming this {difficulty. Thrown from a strand- ed vessel, the Crouch bouy will saturally be blown toward shore by the same force of wind, or by the tide, that caused the ship's predicament, the small line inside onwinding as it drifts shareward. at night a small light on the buay points out its position to those on shore and aboard the ship. It can also, be" used to carrying ship's papers, manifests and other valuables, for marking the location of sunken vessels. and as a life preserver, for which purpose small rope loops are attached to it.'

The N.Y.K. in particular intends to reconstruct liners en various runs, and the outdo the 0.5.K. with superior ships placing large-sized ships especially on the Java line. In this way, the Allied companies are prepared to fight the 0.3K in a body. There is no denying. therefore, that there may arise a freight war on the Indias, South Seas, and China runs. tioned, the 0.3.K. is fully prepared to incur losses through the under- taking of its attempt. It is stated that the OS.K. regards the Calcutta line as a prolongation of its Calcutta and New Orlesos line. though formerly it was said that the New Orleans line was to he abandoned in favour of the new Calcutta line, so that the 0.8.K. will not be greatly concerned however low freight rates may fall on the outward run. Another source or strength to the 0.S.K.. is that if its Dairen

Tun is trespassed upon it can attack the Shanghai line in retaliation. These are the points on which the Allies are somewhat relaxed in their determination. The Osaka journal adds in conclusion tha:: the OS.K declares that it is assured of receiving ample con- signments of cargo on the out ward voyage..
