THE FILME SITUATION.

London, Oct. 20

The United States has not accepted Signor Tittoni's pro- -posal for the constitution of an independent state of Fiume under the League of Nations and the cession of Volosa dis- trict to Italy. It is still hoped, however, that a solution will be reached. It is understood Signor Nitti has made a further strong appeal to the United States Government. The Anglo-

French Governments are endeavouring to ease the situation, which is undoubtedly again becoming critical.

VULTURE PROVED A BIRD

OF ILL OMEN,

Mismi, Florida, September 13, -Many hours before the storm which sank the Ward Liner Corydon in the Bahamas Channel, with a loss of twent-seven lives. a vulture followed the ship and perched on her spars. while at panic stricken crew, believing in the superstitions of the sea, was convinced that it was doomed.

Such is the story brought here by eight of the crew, who were fifty-three hours adrift on an upturned boat, battered and bruis- ed, and without food or water.

All day Sunday as the ship pursued her way in calm sa48 and light winds the great bird hovered overhead.

Sunday night and Monday the Corydon staggered through the smashing seas. Monday night every member of the crew was engaged in a desperate battle for life. There was no food, as the galley and provision rooms were flooded. Tuesday morning the crew lost control of the ship. The wireless apparatus was short circuited and no 8.0.8. call. could be sent out."

When the vessel went under, the Americans in the crew kept their heads and saved the lives of some of the others.

“I slid against a lifeboat and clung to it when the Corydon listed," said one of the survivors. "The lifeboat and I shot into the sea together. Luckily it landed right side up and got in. All the oars were lashed to it." ·

Nine other men got into the lifeboat, and a few moments afterward the Corydon went down. Almost immediately the seas capsized the lifeboat three times, as fast as the men could dive from under it and right it again. They lashed themselves to the seat with strips of clothing.

Third Mate Mallowes told a graphic story of his battle with John Condron, a Greco-American seaman, when the latter became crazed by privation and fear.

"I held him all of the first day and night," said Mallowes.

GREAT FRENCH WIRELESS STATION.

THE WORLD WITHIN RANGE

A wireless station which is being constructed near Bordeaux will be the most powerful station in the world.

The project is directly due to the development of wireless telegraphy during the war, and is the result of co-operation between the United States and the French Government, 5378 the Paris correspondent of the Morning Post.

On General Pershing's arrival in France he required the establishment of a station that should be available night and day without the possibility of interruption. To achieve this an enormously powerful plant was necessary. It was designed by General Ferrie, and the carrying out of General Ferrie's scheme entrusted to American

was

labour.

The work was begun in May, 1918. The station will consist of eight steel pillars 250 metres high, The antence will be 1,200 metres in length, and the power of the current used in connection with them 500 kilowatts, being five- times greater than that of the Eiffel Tower installation and three and a half times greater than that of the Lyons station.

A range of 15,200 miles will be attained, thus bringing any point of the globe within reach. Trans- mission will be at the rate of 50 words a minute.

It is expected that the station,

on which American engineers are still working, will be completed within six months, and it will then, be handed over to the French authorities. ́ ́
