PROGRAMME

THE

A British Consular report from Lyone says:The world's pre- duction of silk in 1912 is estimat- ed at 58,82$,000 lbs., an incre::s of nearly 4,775,000 lbs. us comm pared with 1911, which in its turn had been the heighest on record. Heavy increnees aro anticipated in the 1912 crops in Wustern Europe, and in the ex- ports from the Far East, while production is expected to be lower in South-East Europe and the Near East." Details show || that the increase in Western Europe stands to the credit of both France and Italy, in nearly equal proportions, and that Con ton and Japan are responsible for the larger total of Far Eastern exports. Shanghai and India, on the other hand, show a de crease. The falling-off in the cropa in South-Eastern Europe and tho Near East is shared by every producing country included in this group. The world's consumption is cstimated on the basis of United States and Indian importe of milk, 56 per cent. of the European condition ing-house returns, plus the im Olga

ports of various countries oversens, and the provisional total for 1912 amount to the record total at. 60,189,272 lbs, which is nearly 4,500,000 lbs higher than the 1911 total. The future of the market, states the report, would soom to depend almost entirely. on the of political evnet, and

turn

there can be no hope of a revival
