GALE IN KOBR,

GALLANT RESCUE BY GERMAN 'STEAMER.

The Japan Chronicle of 4th instant reports - Very heavy weaiber has been experienced by vessels running between Yokohama and Kobe, The Hamburg-Amerika liner Saxonia, which arrived in Kobe on the tat instant, reported having met with heavy winds and seas during the voyage, and at one time the ship.was on- able to make beadway against the gale.

Steinway,

Bechstein,

Russell,

Krauss,

Romhildt,

Werner, &o.

At about ten o'clock on the morning of Friday last, the 31st ultimo," when the Saxonia" was passing the Hinamisaki lighthouse, a signal was made to the steamer that a ship had been, wrecked close by, Captain Habel at once "made préparations to attempt to reader assisi- ance, and although a very heavy-swall ̈was" Tuuning succeeded in turning the Saxonia round. Having sighted the wreck-a Japanese. schooner the Sazonia was taken as close to the distressed vessel as was possible with safety, and after a large quantity of oil had been thrown overboard a boat was lowered, BUILT UNDER OUR PERSONAL SUPERVISION manned by several of the crew of the 'Saxonia in charge of the second officer, Mr. Bolsen- EMBOLYING 30 YEARS LOCAL Schmidt,

EXPERIENCE,

The schooner was completely at the mercy of the storm, being tossed up and down, her masts from time to time thrashing the water. Under these circumstances it was impossible for the Sazonia's boat to get alongside, so life. buoys were thrown to the 'Japanean seamen clinging to the wreck, and the three survivors were safely hauled off one by one, and taken on board the Sorento, which then resumed her voyage, bringing the rescued seamen on to Kobe.

Those in the lighthouse could see all that was going on below them, and, doubtless this gallant rescue by Captain Habel and his officers and men is duly entered upon their log.

It appears that the rescued men belong to “Kumano, Kishu.` They left Kámáno 'on the goth ultime with a cargo of timber. The boat encountered a gale off Hinomisaki at 9 am..on the 31st, when the vessel was wrecked and they

were rescued as stated.'"
