LETHAL CHAMBER
ORIMINALS.
REMARK BLE PROPOSAL TO END
WORTHLESS LAYF8."
A lethal chamber for trampr ́and " worth lives," to be followed by cremation, was gested in a remarkable speech by Mr Smallman last month, at the innual meeting the Manchester Crematorium, Limited: 4. Mr. Smallman said a wonderful" imprigi would be given to the movement if cremation were made compulsory in certain cases. All who had died from infections or contagious di seases should be cremated, because this would tend effectively to stamp out the diseases. The bodies of all murderers who were executed ought also to be cremated, and certaibly crimi- nal lavatics should be thus dealt with
"I would not extend a day, or a month, or s year in such cases, declared the speaker: consider them all useless, worthless lives)" It would be a mercy to sach to take them out of their misery painlessly."
"TIRED OF LIFE." He would suggest that a lethal chamber bas erected, not only for criminals, but also for all, useless and worthless lives. There were manY) :
[209 people who were tied of life; and he felt sure that the introduction of a lethal chamber would be a great boon to such. Of course, the chama ber would be under proper control, so, that: There would not be any chance of its bejpg misused.

Cargo impeding the discharge of the Vessel
Mr. Smallman described the professional tramp as one of the great drawbacks we have to contend with. Rates and taxes ware burth; ened by these people, who spent the whole of ̈their existence going from one workhouse to m nuother and begging alms on their waydic Hoạt would not extend the slightest mercy to the professional tramp, but would say that he should be put out of his existence as speedily and painlessly as possible.
NOTHING TO DO WITH CREMATIONJUNT The chairman (Mr. Gušiau Ekbard) said ha did not see what all this had to do with cremation.
Mr. Smellman replied that the question of useless lives had been passing through bìn mind, and that was his proposition.
The chairman intimated that they could not allow-the subject to ba ventilated there.
A Shareholder: You would not cremate them alive, would you ?
Mr.Umallman? No, they must go through...... the lethal chamber first, "
Mr. lagham said there were very powerful reasons for a fethal chamber for some classe of persons; but such a suggestion would have the effect of deterring the progress of their movement.' There was a great deal of praju....... dice against cremation at the present time, which would undoubtedly increase- if it, werd. even proposed to cremate criminals only. I would have a retrogressive effect on persons who had thought of giving directions for their cremation.
Mr. Smallman's remarks made a great sense-
