IN THE TEETH OF THR' STORM, DANS Up went "Pegasus" a few minutes after four n'clock had struck, and three or four minutes ater Mr Butler's balloon followed. Then a cloud which veryone had been draading burst into activity and sprinkled a few drops of rain upon the crowd. In an instant the whole host Society visitors scampered healter-skelter to shelter, With many misgivings on the part of the unenthusiastic section of the spectators the: third starter, "Venus," was launched, and the rest of the competitors, with their teeth set in hard, decided also to go upward. Mr. Rolls bis gigantic Britannia" was lifted rapidly op by the sharp breeze from the S.Wrather 100 sharply, in fact, for the bottom of his basket caught the top of Mrs. Harbord's balloon,

A moment later a great flash of lightning shot across the ground, and this decided Mr. Brewer to abandon his attempt.
The thunderstorm arived as soon as the eighth balloon had started. The balloons were” blotted out of sight by the storm in a few seconds. Feminine Ranelagh waited till.seven o'clock before it dare venture out into the open again,
Mr. Pollock, who had lost his chance of a trip through the mishap to Mrs. Harbord's balloon, decided at seven o'clock to charter the. sparo balloon, "Sapellite."
A PERILOUS DESCENT, & News of each descent was telegraphed ta the Aero Club by the competitor himself. The first news received, was from Loid Royston, who had landed at Bromley; and the next message was from Prof, Huntington, who wired from Croydon. There was a big wait, and 145 then came the ominous unofficial news that Mr.. Bucknall had been struck by lightning. Re. assurance came with a wire from Mr. Bucksall himself, which said:
Safe descent at Earlsfield; voyage¬ten minutes; absolutely driven down by rain; both. of us received electric shock.
Rain was the cause of the descent of all the ober balloonists, with the exception of the intrepid Col. Capper, from whom no cewa was received till Sunday morningpetitors ended,

Mr. Buckoall's adventure, with the lightsing. was not the only incident in his journey, for his anchor tore chimney pots and fragmenis off the roof of some houses at Earlsfield and then: smashed some windo es dem MA
