it will be well to avoid its acqualotunce,· Per Kwongfak, from Shanghai-Mink M♪ 1. unless one understands jujitsu. Interestingunt, and 72 Chloese, Hows comes from irashima, holed for its Boating park. About 350 yards to the west of the park is a great rock, in shape like a rud der, which tradition makes the haunt of a giant devil fish. The rock is accessible an foot from the berch and hither came some days ago two local urchins, Kuraichi and Yasukichi, on their afternoon excursion. Kurakichi was the first to spy what appeared to be the tip of an arm of a good sized octopus, holding on to the rock just above this water. Making a stealthy approach the boy made a quick grab at the tentacle, but no anoner and he touche! the object than up shot from under water another arm, which laid its hold across Kurakichi's aboulders. Then few nut and more; which wound itself tightly round Kumkichi's body, and shrieks and a struggle for freedom follow. ed. Wheo Yasukichi came to the rescue his friend was already. in a helpless condition, The monster probably saw through the water In which it was hidden, for it lifted another tentacle and took off Vasukichi's arma in its sucking grasp. Yasukichi made as brave a fight of it as a bay of twelve, could do, and he is a well developed boy. Perhaps the monster had not as good a foothold as it might have had or perhaps it thought it had given a scare to the urchins to let him alons in the precincts sacred to his monstership; any way, after a lew minutes tug it loosened its hold on the boy, and with a splash withdrew its arms under the brine. Kurakichi, who is of the same age as his toscuer, had to be carried home by his friend, and when hit body was examined afterward it was covered over with spots of purple and blue. The boys say the thickest part of the creature's tentacles visible out of the water was about the sixe of their thigh.
