General opinion here is, and naval officers are not slow to express it, that the whole affair has been bungled. If the battleships in the Atlantic are really to be sent to the West coast, the feeling is that a serious mistake was made in denying it, especially as Mr. Metcalf seems to bave had no better reason for doing so than to witness the gaping wander of his home friends and neighbours when he told them of the big things he was going to do.

The matter would have assumed less serious aspect if the purpose of the department to send ships to the Pacific had been admitted frankly

When can Chiengmai be reached by motor car from Bangkok? is a question frequently asked, but difficult to answer. Some go so far as to say that owing to the mountains and valleys to be traversed and waterways to be J. & F. MARTELL'S. spanned, the idea is out of the question as a road leading all the way from Bangkok to Chiengmai is impossible. We should like. however to have belter authority on this point. At present, pedestrals locomotion takes a ght days to go from Chiengmai to Muangiern via Muang Lee, and from there to Raheng four days, and from Rabeng to Kampong four days and ham Kampong to Paknampoli six days. At the latter place the train can be reached for Bangkok. Natives are in the habit of making the foregoing long journeys while carrying their merchandise and other goods by bullock carts or on the backs of mules.

It would seem therefore that the construc tion of a good road for a preat part of the way is possible.
