FAMOUS KOVAL EXPLOKEN,

DUKE OF 1HR ABRUZZI IN LONDON, The Duke of the Abrunzi, who recently ascended the kuwentori peaks, is paying a brief visit to London for the purpose of ex. pressing his thanks for the assistance that was

afforded to his expedition by the British

authorities in Africa. "But for his official duties iq Italy be would have come later by the year, when more members of the Government are in town and the Hayal Geographical Society is in session. The Earf of Elgin, with whom he would have liked a personal interview, is still away, and he has only been able informally to express his rcknowledgments to the Colonial Office. Yesterday he called at the offices of the Royal Geographical Society und had an interview with Dr. Keltie, the secretary.. He also lunched with the Italian Ambassador and his suite at the Embassy in Grosvenor square, and met there Sir Harry Johnston,

'The Duke, is roserving for the Italian Geographical Society, ourspecial representative learns, the full account of his expedition, and in all probab lity he will publish a book. As rangements are also being made for and authoritative account to be given next spring to the Royal Geographical Society in London

With two Courmayeur guides, the Duke climbed the five highest peaks of the range, and ascertained that they are under 17,000 feet, which is Inwer considerably than some authorities had been inclined to atrame, The highest peak bad not been climbed before, The rumour that be found many difficulties were unfounded..'n the contrary, I am assured. adds our representative, that everything went very smooth, and that he got on 'splendidly, both with his

the own people and with natives on the British side of the line The results of the expedition have no0 political significance; they are purely geo- graphical. Probably one outcome of it will be that the peaks will be duly named. At present the mountains in that part of the continent have not the names other than hose that the nativer have given them, and explorers realise the need of im provement in this direction.

Brighton magistrles were again occupied for several hours in hearing the charges against Henry Hawkins, 6, and his son, William George Hawkins, 27, of conspiring to obtain money by false pretences from persons pure chasing certain powders advertised to cure a large number of disensen,

Mr. Leycesies appeared for the Public Pro secutor, whose cue is that this powders were made of drugs which would have absolutely no effect at all upon the various diseases named by the prisoners. The prosecution are also seeking to show that definite false pretences were used to induce people to buy quack medicines, and that the business was carried on under a variety of false names and addresson.*

Prisoners lived at Kemp Town in a house which could either described as "14, Che sham-rd." or The Linies," and they also had a manufactory add office over some stables, in Bristol-gardens, Kemp Town. Other addresses were St, Cloud, Worthing, and Sutton House Wood-green, London, the latter, it is 'alleged' being used for the purpose of receiving letters for the elder prisoner.

UNDER SEVEAL NAMES.

Dr. Harking of America, #ev. Joseph Hope Rev. John Wilson," and Rév. Thomas Stoss" are names which have been given in evidence as having been used for the purposes of the business., it was aver | tised largely in various newspapers, and when persons answered the advertisements packets would be sent to them containing circulars, pamphlets, testimonials, and descriptions of medicinal remedies,

The first of a large number of witnesses called yesterday was Sidney Burnett assistant

order in any design required.
