HONGKONG · METEOROLOGICAL SIGNALS.
A NEW CODE.
We have received from the Hongkong Observatory a new code of meteamlogical, signals which comes into force at Hongkong on Now Year's Day. They are the same as those at present in use at Shanghai, and will be hoisted on the mast beside the time-ball at Kowloon Point for the information of masters of vessals leaving the port. They do not neces; sarily imply that bad weather is expected. The sigɛale are as follows:-

[Continuid from page 3):
As Mm. Taft, for a multitude of reasons, could not take this long journey Miss Rouse- velt's special, companion in Mia Mabel Te Boardman, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William
Boardman of Washington. Miss Amy McMillan, daughter of the late santor from Michigan, is also one of her companions. Mrs. Dubois, wife of the Idaho senator, is the official chaperone of the President's daughter, and with entertainments planned in her honour. Several Misi McMillan, aro participating in all the other women well known in the official and social world add éclat to the party. Among these in Mr. Stone, wife of the Missouri senatorį

Probably no other young lady ever took such a trip as that which is being enjoyed by Miss Alice Roosevelt. Certainly no other A- merican young woman ever had such honours showered upon her as have been and are ac corded the President's daughter. So far it has been a "grand tour," such as princes of the blood royal take through the continent of Eu- rope and to the outlying possessions of their respective crowns. Primarily Miss Poosevelt is making the long journey to please her father, who intends himself making the top when' his tenure of office is at an end. It is not to be supposed, however, that the opportunity for such a journey under such flattering circums tances is unwelcome to her. She is intensely patriotic, and more than apco has bee The above signal, will, as heretofore, be heard to declare that she never will travel hoisted only when typhoons exist in sucli posiin Europe until she has visited every

land where floats the Star and Stripes. Already she has travelled extensively for a young woman of her years... She has visited Cuba and Pono Rico, and has journeyed to nearly every part of the United States proper, from the rocky, barren hoigh of Mt. Desert to the sunny respits on the Gulf Coast aug Southern California. Knowing the President's interest in all things pertaining to their welfare, the islands gave his daughter and the dis tinguished official party which accompany the Secretary of War a series of fiestas and recep- tions such as have not been seen since the Spanish flag was hauled down at Manila and Castilian rule in the islands ended.
COST OF THE TAIP.
A wire published in one of the American journals just prior to the departure of our guests states that the acific Mail Steamship Company, is to receive a very sneg sum in the way of passenger fares. This will total $28,000 (gold). 'It is also estimated that in the way of tips the nethers of the Taft party were sup- posed to be put to the expense of $1,800 while on board the steamer Manchuria going to the Orient and on the Koren returning home, it being taken for granted they will observe the usual tipping custom aboard Pacific linera,
The Southern Pacific and Inion Pacific and their connections, together will the Pullman Company, will also derive considerable revenue from the party for the round trip between San. Francisco and Washington. They will get for division among themselves fully $14,440, which incluries something like $2,100 for dining car service. This will be one of the most lucrative special parties ever hauled across the con tinent by the overland roadı.
It is figured out by the railroad and steam.
WEATHER-FORECASTS and BTOK-ship people that those of the party paying
their own way will each be put to an expense of $650 for the round trip, even if the Island
