THEOSOPHY ON THE STAGE.

WEIRD DRAMA WITH OREY DIRDS AND RED HOUNDS.

Theosophy has been dramatised; its mys.

taries have been materialiser and divided into acts; twentieth century muramers, aided by wigs and sticks of "make up," have played the part of mystic anula.

The world has been laughing with George Beanard Shaw at the Court Theatre. On Saturday, July 8th, the Sloane-square (London) play-house was filled with soulful young women, sombre-eyed Hindus, and earnest young men --most of them Theosoplists, in fact, to whom Mr. Annie Dant had been lecturing at the world's congress of Theosophists at the Queen's Hall. They enthused aver the soul drains.

Mrs. Besant hersell, dressed in Indian robes of gleaming white silk, and a necklace of Brahmin beads, was a striking figure in the stage box. Mr. W. B. Yeats, the Irish poet and author of the second play, "The Shadowy Waters, and M. Maeterlinck, the "Belgian Shakespeare, were the centre of an adoring circle in the units.

INCENSE AND INVOCATIONS..

The first item of the programme was a Theo sophic play, "The Shrine of the Golden Hawk,// written by a Theosophic woman, Miss Florence Farr, and used entirely by Thebiophlets.

Eastern music, soft and langourous, and ployed by a Theosophist orchestra, stole through the darkened theatre, and the small of burning incense added to the weird effect when the curtain rose on a scene on Mountingan, Br. ., 7,047, I. Tameron, 3rd Sept, Bakhua, near Sinai, about 4.0 B. C.

Invocations chanted to unknown deities in a dreary monotone by black-haired young women in Eastern robes, and men wearing the garments fashionable among priests six thousand years ago, play an important part in the Theosophic drama.

Gebuel, the Magician of Fire and Metals, played with great dignity by Mr. Sidney Paget, had made a talisman to Heru, the "hining One, in the form of a Golden Hawk in the hope of of overwhelming the power of Zozer, King of Egypt, who, ending this out, sends his daughter Nectons, who is skilled in the mysteries of Isis, lo win the Golden Hawk for Egypt

Miss Italia Conti repre ented Nectoris, who,

as becomes a mistress of mysteries, has a twin sister soul in the spirit world called The Ka, and, partly through her woman's wiles and partly through the help of The Ka, she penetrates the shrine where no mortal has been known to enter and live, dances in the cold dame of the farthern Star, feels the substance of Heru around her,and finally confronts the defeated hagcian with exultation on her ince and the Talisman of the Golden Hawk, giver of exultation of the heart, nn her breast,

ICES AND COFFEE.

The material realities of ces and coffee brought the audience to earth again for a few minutes, and then the curtain rose on the second play. "The Shadowy Water, which was even more unearthly than the fist,

More of a ritual than a play was Mr. Year's dramatic novelty, which introduced the rapt Theosophists to the deck of a Norse galley. Much to the disgust of his sailors, Forgael, the owner, insists on aimlessly wandering through unknown seat, where there are no ships to rob, in the hope of reaching "the streams where the world ends."

A supernatural being whom he calls The Fool has given him an enchanted harp, and told him that in these unknown seas he would meet his Heart's Desire, the immortal woman of his dreams.

Between 1881 and 1895 the name of Emile Arion was on everybody's lips as that of one of the chief and most mysterious characters in the famous Panama standals. Arton was a native of Aluce, and was born in Strasburg August, 1849. Two years after the Franco- German war be opted for French nationality and settled in Paris, where he speedily became a notability in the world of finance.. He was especially associated with M. Githert Le Guay, as one of the Directors of the Société Francaise de Dynamite an enterprise which came to an untimely end in 1892 M, Arton then disap peared, and the liquidators announced a de ficiency in the accounts of some four million francs, Meanwhile the Panama crash occurred, and it was discovered that M. Arton had acted as the intermediary between Baron de Reinach and certain French deputies in arranging for the passage of a billthrough the French Cham- bers permitting the Panama Canal Companying to raise a large loun by means of lottery bond, M. Arlon was said to have bribed a large num ber of deputies, and a public inquiry showed that this chage was well founded. He was prosecuted "it absentia," and was sentenced to twenty years' imprisonment fer embezzling the funds of the Socèè Francaise de Dynamite, port. and to five years' loss of civil rights and a fine of 400,000 francs for corrupting depullen. For three years the warrants issued for his arres! remained unerecuted, and it was generally be lieved that he was protected by a number of deputies and other highly-placed persons whom he had bribed. It afterwards transpired that the French Govern ent entered into communi. cation with him on several pecations with a view to obtaining from him certain compromi sing documents he was believed to possess. These negotiations falled, and in 1895 M. Arion was arrested in London at the instance of M. Bourgcola. He was at that time living at St. John's Hill, Clapham Junction, where he car ried on a grocery business under the name of the Photo Tea Company. Anton opposed his extradition, and the case was carried to the House of Lords on the ground that the prose cution was political. Eventually, however, he was sent for trial to Paris, No sensational revelations were made at the trial, which took place before the Seine Court of Assizes, and Artoa was sentenced to six years' penal servi tude on the embezzlement count alone. Later on he was tried os some of the other counts, and sentenced to a further term of eight years' imprisonment. A few months afterwarde M. Arton was released, and since then nothing has been heard of bint
