The cross-action between the French steamer Eclair and Portuguese steamer Hot Keng concluded at the Supreme Court to-day when, in giving judgment, the Chief justice said-
About 3.15 or 3.30 am. of 22nd Novem ber last, a collision occurred between the French steamer Eclair, and a Portuguese Small steamer, or larger launch, called the The collision occurred some three to five miles off a promopiary known Song Yia Point, situa ed, roughly, Sume 70 miles from Kwong Chau Wan, and it resulted in the sinking of the Hot Keng. THE Birininghom Post says it is to be sug- gested to the Foreign Secretary that, in view of the present feeling towards foreigners in China, and in recognition of the preservation of the life and property of foreigners during the Boxer rising by Chang-Chih-Tung, the influence of the Government will be used to secure his reinstatement as Viceroy at Wu chang. The Under Secretary for Foreign Affairs is meanwhile to be invited, with refer ence to the summary of railway concessions in China up to the end of November, 1898, in which 7,80 miles of British railway conces sions were shown, as against a smaller amount for each of the other Powers, to state what number of miles of such British concessions is now existent; what British railways are being actually made; and what action the Govern- ment is taking in the matter.

THE case in which a native, charged by Jr. H. Humphreys with entering his residence for the purpose of committing a felony on Tuesday night, again came up for hearing this morning. Mr. C. Ewens appeared on behalf of Mr. Hom phreys In giving evidence; Mrs. Humphreys stated that at 7.30 pm on Tuesday she heard the front door banging, and went into the hall where she found the prisoner sitting on one of the chairs. She asked him what he wanted and was informed that he felt tired and want. ed to sit down. Alarmed at the action of the man she sent for her husband who had him arrested. The prisoner, in bis-defence, gave an incoherent and strange explanation. The Magistrate adjourned the case to the roth inst, and ordered the prisoner to be kept under medical supervision.
