THE LATE MR. MUSKETT.

The following from the Penang Gazette may be of interest to some of our readers ;----

We bear with much regret of the death of Mr. W. A. Muskett, which took place at Kow- loon on the ist instant. Mr. Muskett was well known in Penang where he was for some years from 1891 to, we believe, 1893, sub- editor of the Straits Independent. He return- ed to Penang and edited the Strails Maritime. Journal during 1895 and part of 1896. He was a true Bohemian, and in his time had played many parts. Born within sound of Bow-Bella' he was a cockney, yet one it was impossible to keep within the marrow. bounds of even the first city in the world, and at an early age he joined a travelling theatrical company which got étran- ded in Constantinople. He afterwards travel led in South Africa, and eventually found his way to india, where among other work be edited a Pooná paper, and where Mr. Harry Stanley was then starring with his burlesque company, which undôr the name of Harry Pyne he joined as scene painter. What sort of a scenic artist he made it is difficult. to say, for we have frequently heard bim relate that he had ever previously put brush to canvas, but he certainly attained some lefficiency in the art, and in the Penang Town Hall there are still portions of stage scenery, including the drop scene-now somewhat faded--which owe their existence to bis industry. Harry Pyne remained some years with Stanley fand rose from scene painter to leading comedian, author and stage man- ager. Having left the Stanley Company, Mr Muskett, no longer Harry Fyne, conducted the He Straits Inpependent, as noted above. entered heart and soul into, the work of the Amateur Dramatic Club, who during his stay. gave several excellent performances, ¿ He also wrote two burlesques for the Engineers' In-. stitute here, in 1892 and 1893, which were rendered with great success, oos of them being H. E. Chang Jen-chun, as readers of these afterwards given before a crowded audience in columns have already been aware for some time, the Town Hall. For his services ha was is not a very popular personage with Germans elected a life member of the Engineers In- in that province, nor, for that matter, a persona stitute. He also took much interest in things grata with his own people. Our native corres- Masonic, and was at one time Secretary pondent at Peking now writes that the Waiwu of the Royal Prince of Wales Lodge, Peg- pu, or Foreign Ministry, has lately receivedatang. After leaving the Straits Independent formal telegraphic dispatch from the German he joined the "London : Lyric" Company Governor of Tsingtao, stating that Governor then travelling in Penang, and later on was Chang jen-chun does not work smoothly with with Messrs. THE GOVERNOR OF SHANTUNG,

This appointment is said to have been due to the strong recommendations of both Prince Ching and Wang Wen-thao,

1A SMART MOVE.

Alaking dispatch to hand states that the Russian Minister, M, Lessar, recently informed the Chinese Plenipotentiaries that he would forego.the clause in the late Li Hung-chang's Manchurian Convention referring to Railways and Mines in the three provinces, and consent to its being cancelled and erased from the do- cument. This "forbearance" was, at first, well received by the Chinese, who were grateful for it. Fortunately for them, however, it it alleged that H.E. Hu Yu-fen happened to be with the Chinese Plenipotentiaries at the time the two wem talking over the matter, and pointed out to them that this was no forbearance at all on Octive, Jason Cave Poggiali, Emma (2) Russian Minister's part, for an almost Parker, F.
