GAMBLING AT ETON :-A. gentieman intimately connected with Eton has been. interviewed by the Daily Mail concerning the betting crase among public school boys. He says that the evil has given a good deal of trouble to the authorities, who are doing their best to stamp it out. Recently it came to the knowledge of the headmaster at Eton that 'many of the boys belled largely on horses, and betting circular and cards were found in

several of their rooms. Then Dr. Warre had the whole of the school assembled and hid it dwn that the boys were not to buy either new papers or "tipping" cars in the sucels,. bu. that newspapers would be supplied for general reading in the various houses. CHRISTMAS DAY in England was not, in spite of the weather prophets, such a very miserable day, after all. It was not an old-fus hioned Christmas day. The country was nu draped in snow, although here nad there a little snow fell. Skating was scarcely a possibility There was not even a bright winter sun, setting in a glow of fire behind the hills and the trees and the houseiops of the cities. It was dull to bé̟ig with, and rains for two or three hours. It' was what, perhaps, a Lord Chancellor might be templed to call "a sort of a Christmas Day. But it was a vast improvement on Christmas."Everywhere the cheery spirit of tise season prevailed. The postmen suggered nader loads of Christmt;reetings sal seemed baller than ever before. In London, as else- where, the day passeil off gladly. The churches and chapels were thronged with worshipper The hospitals, workhouses, and other public last tutious joyfully celeb wed the day.. CONCESSION HUNTING..

A BELGIAN CONCESSION.

It is reported from Tientsin that the negotia- lions, which, have been going on for some time regarding the Belgian demand for a new Con- cession at that port, are now concluded. This new concession lies further down along the Tientsin Liver than all the other concessions

and covers area of about six hundred man..

HER CONCESSION.

A correspondent, writing from Tientsin, say Before his death, the late. Li Hung-chang was approached by the Lilian authorities who re- quested him to use his influence to persuade the Chinese Governmentto grant them a Concession at Tien sin. But Li Hung-chang rejected the demand and the Italians felt very much disap. pointed. Subsequently, however, they seized a large piece of land, on which are many native houses, on the east bank of the Tientsin River. They have since improved the reads and built a Police Station on the land. But they impose a greater tax on the houses within the limits of the land than that collected in Tientsin by the Tientsin Provisional Government. It is snid that the Board of Foreign Affairs in Peking will take up the matter in hand soon and ask the Italians why they took the land before the Chinese Government consented-Mercury,
