PRESENTATION.
Prior to the ball the President, on behalf of the St. Andrew's Society, made a presenta, tion to the Ian. Secretary (Mr. David Wood), who was unfortunately indisposed, and unable to be present. In making the presentation, which was formally accepted by the Colonial Secretary, the President said Your Excellencies, ladies and gentlemen. Be fore proceeding with the first dance I have the honour and the pleasure on behalf of the St. Andrew's Society to ask Mr. Wood, our Indefa- tigable Hon. Secretary, to accept from the members of the Committee and past Presidents a silver salver, and from the Committee and members of the Society a silver tea service on the occasion of his recent marriage to Miss Boulton. We earnestly wish them both a long life of many happy days, usefulness, health and prosperity. Mr. Wood is the life and soul of our Society and the success hitherto attending our annual celebration of St. Andrew is due to his untiring efforts. (Applause).
The Colonial Secretary (Hon. J. H. Stewart Lockhart) formally accepted the gift in the name of Mr. Wood. In doing so, he said that he had been asked to, fill the position at the very las
moment.
It was an exceedingly difficult po tion in which he found himself, and that for two reasons. In the first place, Mr. Wood was in the happy position of being a very recently married man, and he thought his hearers would agree with him that that was a difficult position to assume unless you were actually in the posi- tion yourself. (Laughter.) The other reason was that it was impossible for him to speak with the feelings Mr. Wood would have spoken with. He was sure that if Mr. Wood had been present he would have said he did not in the least deserve the gift and that all the work he had done for the Society had been done purely for the love he bore to the country to which he belonged, On behalf of Mr. Wood, he begged to thank the St. Andrew's Society far the pieces of plate which they had been good chough to present on his sideboard for the admiration of his friends, He trusted that members would often have the plasure of seeing it there. (Applause.) The inscription on the silver salver was as follows
W. D. Braidwood, W. Kidd, A. C. More, W. Ramsay. J. Rodger, Skinner, Peter Dow, J. Maciehose, C. Sherrington, A. Ellis, A. Moir, Duncan Clark, W. Malcom Watson, F. Mait- | land, G. S. Sharp, J. F. Boulton, T. P. Cochrane, W. Armstrong, A. G. Gordon, Andrew Forbes, James Keenan, G. M. Young, F. 5. Fulcher, W. A. Stopani, and the Hon. Secretary.

Of course no account of the Bail, from a lady's 'polat of view would be complete unless man- tion was made of a few of the more striking dresses worn by the fair sex. The Goverment House party were naturally dressed in a stylists fashion and attracted considerable attention, but perhaps the smartest attire seen during the evening was that worn by Mrs. A. Denison which consisted of white brocade trimmed with chiffon and gold sequin sauve, lo' was un- doubtedly a handsome dress and the wearer, who, by the way is a most graceful exponent of the terpsichorean art, showed it off to splendid ad- vantage. Another noticeable dress was that worn by Mrs. F. Smyth, who appeared in floral chiffon over white glace silk handsomely trimmed with pearls to suit. Mrs. C. F. Smith looked neat in a pretty pink brocade profusely trimmed with Paris face insertion, relieved by steamers of pink, riband. Mrs Retallick was pleasingly attired in black silk, and her little daughter was charming in a poppy coloured frock. One lady was wearing a pretty blue striped brocade liberally trimmed with cream chitton, while Mrs. Andrew had on a dress
of pale green. A cream dress re-Gros, Mr. and Mrs. Grate, Mr. and Mrs.quested to apply at the Company's Office for

Mrs. Scott appeared in a pink brocade set off with Faris lace insertions. Another lady ap peared in a very pretty white silk lace relieved simply by a bunch of poppies in front. A num- ber of the white silk dresses were really very charming with their plaid sashes, and several of the, dresses of black selections worn by the older dames were exceedingly smart. in deed most of the dresses were of smart appear." ance and though many bore signs of "old clothes revived the general impression was good and reflected well on Colonial dress. makers, who apparently took every pains to ensure appropriate designs and pleasing
