THE ANNUAL BALL.
The birthday of Scotia's patron saint was celebrated last evening by the members and friends of the Hongkong St, Andrew's Society in the orthodox manner, and despite the un- pleasant climatic conditions which prevailed the function proved to be an undoubted success. Early in the day the weather was for a while fine in the sense of not being wet, but there was the air a feeling of coming rain in and a noticeable disinclination on the
bannerettes depicting St. George and the Dragon and Britannia, and bore the legend "Long live the King," "God save the Queen." The Royal Standard, and the Prince of Wales's Feathers were suspended below, and con tributed to what might be described as an. exceedingly pretty picture. At the top end of St. Andrew's Hall was a large paint- ing framed in green foliage representing St. The whole was Andrew bearing his cross.

The St. Andrew's Ball is the one great function of the year where kith and kin mingle 10 "tak a cup o'tindness," and as the lads and lasaies from the land of the heather are renowned for their enthusiasin it is not surprising to find their efforts are always an unqualified success.
