ficquenting the building, traffic, if and men fuckily bid inky which withted there, would soon have died a natural death. '

As a wind up to this long letter, I would like to ask Mr Talmage one question,

In the first paragraph of his letter of the 17th May Mr. Talmage states that he has had Intimate connection with the Seamen's Club in its conception and organization, and from that time to the present. In the next sentence he says that. for the Missionaries to consent to the furnishing of beer or other intoxicating liquors in the building would be a violation of their trust."

But Mr. Talmage has forgotten (or, perhaps, does not wish to remember) that at a meeting held at the Amoy Club on Monday the oth November 1879, at which meeting he was seat, when Mr. Giles, H.B.M. Acting Consul was Chairman! the Chairman stated that the

BERLIN, May 15th. Three thousand miners have truck in the Breslau district, Prussia. It is reported from St. Petersburg that the Nihilists had arranged to take the life of the Czar yesterday while His Majesty was attending the funeral of Count Tolstol The plot was discovered, and the arrest of a large number of persons immediately took place, the majority of them being connected with the army. Several were found in a house near a place where the funeral would pass. It is believed the authorities had a suspicion that advantage would be taken of the presence of the Car at the funeral, and instructions were given for one hundred detectives to mingle with the populace, with the result as stated.

meeting was called to decide whether the project. ed Seamen's Club was to be opened on teetotal, temperance, or other principles, making a wide distinction between teetotalismand temperance.

After some conversation regarding the disposal of the funds in hand, it was proposed by Mr, T. D. Boyd and seconded by Mr.W.S.Orr, "That the Seamen's Club' be established on teetalal principles." An amendment to this was proposed by M. R. H. Pye and seconded by Captain A. J. The original proposition was then put to the meeting, when five voted for and it against it, and the amendment was carried by it votes against five.

Then Mr. Talmage goes on to say in the same paragraph-" that any gentlemen can have faller information by calling on the Secretary- he will be most happy to show any gentlemen the whole history of Club."-But Mr. Talmage evidently has forgotten that a gentleman, acting. on behalf of the community, of Amoy, wrote to the Secretary asking where the Seamen's Club Committee obtained the authority to sell or rent the Club premises, and requesting to see the "Trust" deed.
