Interesting Talk At The Rotary Club
Plant At The New Bank
Air Conditioning, "its workings and advantages, were fully explained by Mr. E.M.K. Mead, who was responsible for the put- ting up of the system at the new Hong Kong and Shanghai Bank Building, at the weekly Win of the Rotary Club held at the Hong Kong Ho ́e yesterday. Professor L` Forster, presided.
Mr. Mead in his talk explained the lay out of the plant," its' functions and everything that had anything to do with the smooth running of the system. He voiced the hope that should any new buildings be put up in Hong Kong in the near future those responsible will not forget i install the air cond tions sys- lem as in a few years he was sure every home and building wil be equipped with one,
The speaker was introduced to the gathering by Professor Forster who stated that there was no one better qualified to speak than Mr, Mead as hẹ was the man responsible for the putting up of the system at the new Bank Building,
The following guests were intro- duced:
Messrs: A. N.. Braudi, S. T. Greene, P. B. Parks. Fl. Lt. Kunt, R.A.F. L. Metcalfe, R.A., Mr. W. J. Lockhart-Smith (Hong Kong) and Dr. J. P. Maxwel. (Pekifig).
Addressing the gathering Mr.
Mead sald:-

I am afraid that this talk will be somewhat disjointed, but I feel sure that you will appreciate the difficulties of trying to put toge- ther a colierent paper during the last few days before leaving the Colony, and that you will there- fore forgive it's shortcomings.
Air Conditioning is subject which cannot fail to provoke Inter- est in anyone living in such climate as this. Die-hards Are „apt to speak with heat, about any "tampering with nature" even as they sip their anti-prandial gin. the same argument was no doubt used when baths were frst intro- duced. But speaking seriously, it must be obvious that if one can work all day and even sleep all night under temperate climatic conditions, the physical and men- tal drain on cne's vitality will be much reduced. To produce such conditions is the aim in an air conditioned but ding.

At first sight it may be difficult to appreciate why passing alr through water sprays should re- duce instead of increase the hu- midity. The explanation is this. A quantity of warm air saturated with moisture contains a greater weight of water vapour than an equal quantity of cold saturated air. If then the air be first cool- ed to the saturation point (the dew point) and then the cooling
be continued, a certain amount of moisture has actually to condense
amount out of the air. The
of moisture left in the air at the end of the process depends on the temperature to which the air is cooled. The air would still be saturated but the actual weight weight of water vapour per unit
SALE OF WORK
