LOSS OF SUNLIGHT THROUGH SMOKE
While the case for smoke abate- ment can be viewed from many standpoints, one of the the more important is the loss of sunlight resulting from atmospheric pollu- tion in urban districts. Data are now being collected on this subject at
where deposit two stations, gauges are maintained, at Halifax. It has found that the more hea- vily polluted of the two areas showed a loss of 20 per cent. of sunlight, as compared with the other, in 1931-1932, and 17 per cent. for the following year. It that from the may be stated standpoint of deposited impur- ties, the range of difference be- tween the two stations is by no means exceptionally' wide.

address was a consideration of the relation of the drought of 1933 to stored water, the conditions on the gathering ground of the Alwen Reservoir, the source of Birkenhead's water supply, being examined in some detail as typic- al of an undertaking designed and worked on orthodox' lines. The raising of the top water level of this reservoir to the full limit permissible under the Act author- ising construction had provided ample storage up the present. There was a possibility that se11.20 veral dry years would follow last year, and
whilst certain reser- voirs seemed capable of equallsing the flow over three dry years, in each of which the rainfall ap- proximated to 80 per cent of the average, they might not be cap- able of meeting the conditions arising during one extremely dry year in which the rainfall was 10 per cent. or below. Probably in most cases it would not be eco- nomical to increase the storage capacity beyond certain limits, and authorities whose reservoirs could not be relied upon to meet the worst possible conditions should be in a position to supplement their supply in case of need The from some other source.
time was opportune to investigate generally the yields and capacities of the reservoirs of the country. On the question of rural area' supply, where springs or "wells were relied upon, it was pointed out that there existed undertak-"
