New York advices reported the opening rate at 4.79 and the closing rate at 4.64.1/4. The market was erratic.

I feel that you would prefer to know the worst, and I can assure you that the accounts which you have now to consider are not based either upon an optimistia valuation of what has happened or upon the anticipation of favourable recovery in world commercial affairs which may not mature. Our company occupies a position which is certainly not comparable with that of any other euterprise in the motor industry. Those of you who lent support to our enterprise at the time. of its initiation will fully understand that our "aspiration was to cater With the exception of the Shang- for and supply world demand hai rate which was unchanged at for road transport. By world 110) and the Bangkok rate which demand". I mean something much was put up to 136, other rates were greater than national consumption. I put down."

The year 1832 will, we all' hope, mark the nadir of commercia self-suficiency. I have to confess that those industrialists who were content, from a national point of view, to take in their own wash- ing have enjoyed comparative prosperity. And this has been at the expense of others like ourselves who sought # wider scope for activity. Our investment and organization was designed upon plan which contemplated four fifths of its output of passenger and commercial vehicles, being sold in the export market. In regard to tractors we expected that not than nine-tenths of production capacity would be absorbed by overses demand.

our

Had we been content to cater for an insular output, I have no doubt that four years LEO WO should not have received so much capital support as was offered: but at the same time, we should have been able, in 183% to present Д Kore pleasing picture of domestic success. The losses which this company has sustained, as recorded in the accounts presented to you, have accrued principally because of our endeavours to increase British oversea trade.

Azia Tands, Limited, has received the following report from their New York correspondents, E. A. Pierce & Co. In view of the uninterrupted rise, the mere fact that the reaction has been so violent, drastic and concentrated does not signify any fundamental change. In other words, in the business outlook is reassuring, the stock market is all right. It is quite reasonable to expect more selling tomorrow. However, if this is the so-called technical reaction, some decree of equilibrium should be reaction within the next two days and we do not believe it is anything more that technical Wheat: Another wave of liquidation occurred, and has doubtless improved the technical situation to some... extent. Current Year's Export BusiÑOSS.

I have been asked to make one remark concerning

the

export business and this company's position relative to that of the other members of the British motor industry. Doubtless during the past week you have seen that the news-papers have made quite a feature of the success of the British motor industry, quoting actual figures of exports during the first five months of this year. It will be some satisfaction, I am sure, to all the 'teinbers of this: company to know that one-third- of that total was exports made by this company.
