The main race of the day, the Fanling Grand National, and the Fierce Grove Memorial Cup drew only three startors, Christ- mas Frolic being made a hot favourite, The pony ran very well over the first two miles, but stumbled over the very last jump (the water jump) and threw Mr. Stanton. The race was won by Duke of Milan with Loch Ryan second.

Miss Yvonne Shenton won the

We are

not far advanced into March and already the 59 and 50th Divisions have been defeated near Yungfeng (N.-E. of Kian); some of them have been killed, some were disarmed and sent back to us, and some passed over to the "Red" Party which in this way increases. ite strength every now and then. Rumours About Chiang Kai Shek. The rumour saye that Chiang Kai Shok tried to make a com~ promise with the "Reds" probably to send them against the Japanese, but we cannot believe that. Wo me that he has been stocking ammuni- sent from Hankow in large, m tion and autotrucks; coolies were bers, and cach hsien is supposed to provide 800 coolies for the trans- port of ammunition. That means war and a real effort to fight com- munism. We can only to wait and see. In the meantime "Red"" parties ramble all over the country, loot all they can and carry away the produce of looting to the main corps, which is generally seven miles from the big cities occupied by the soldiers. Last week a "Red" gang captured a lot of land-owners in a good village, amongst them was a Chinese Missionary who was released on payment of a good ran- aom; the Reds" never know that a Missionary; had they known, they would not let him go s easily.

Missionary,

The Rev. Esteban is still in their hands; negotiations have lasted for months and he has not been re leaned. Quite recently they agreed to release him on payment of $2,000. General opinion" was that the "Reds" would take the money but! not release the man, and in fact they kept the money but Rev. Esteban is still with them. They ask now 20,000 dollars.

Now Chiang Kai Shek has gone to the North and the "Reds" are still fighting the Government. So there has not been any compromise. The inst word is that Chiang Kai Shek has abandoned Kiangai to the good care of the Cantonese. If this is true We will know from your Canton reports. Until today we have seen nothing like that, and if it is truc we can only wish them well and hope that they will be more successful than the Nanking
