TWO WEEKS OF UNPARALLELED NOISE

SHIU CHOW CELEBRATES CHINESE NEW YEAR

(From Our Own Correspondent.}

Spre Chow, Kwangtung,

Feb. 7. Some optimistic souls hope China will turn away from the lunar New Year. They should visit Shin Chow and be disillusioned. There were celebrations here at the time of our New Your but about the only ones who even pretended in terest in them were the soldiers and government officials. No doubt their enthusiasm was the result of

orders.

Bat Chinese New Year! Here it Ineans two weeks of unparalleled Aoise; loud noises, louder noises, and still louder noises. There are processions during the day and processions during the night while the native orchestras play without reasing. And people! Normally speaking Shiu Chow is well crowd ed.but for these last days ono, can hardly find the city for the people. Every man and his dog have been out parading the streets while the children pushing around showing off their new toys have flooded the place. Stores have been redecorat ed, new signs painted and proudly hung where the passerby is certain to ran into them, and the hawkers

have done 4

rushing business Small wonder with so much doing Chinese New Year that the na tives rarely stop in their way to give Jan. 1st a second thought.

*

Soldiers and Scholars,

All schools opened yesterday, the soldiers have gone back to their work of marching through the streets and blowing bugles at all hours, the shops are ready for business, and yet Chinese New Year seems very much with us Shopkeepers may "wait on you but they'd much prefer telling one all about the gifts they received, the soldiers march cheerfully out of step is they go singing by, and the students going to schools seem solely interested in determining where they are going to fire their next firecracker. It is just as well that Chinese New Year comes mnly a year it takes the people fully that long to recover.

Cold Weather Breaks,

If to-day can be taken as an omen, the long bitter spell of cold weather that has lain on Shiu Chow for the greater part of a month has finally broken. It has been warming up steadily this last week until even the poor people no longer look completely frozen. Al- though there was not as much rain- fall this winter as was expected there have been scattered days of rain that have earved to keep the dust down..

"Have you soon Shaw "every body asks me that and then comes the second question "What is he like!

The only answer is that he is exactly like, Barnard Shaw! Ho looks like his photographs and he tilks in the traditional manner. Perhaps the only surprise that he had prepared for the presamen who met him on board the Empress of Britain on Saturday morning was that be greeted them with geniality, and talked for three quarters of an hour. But Shaw would not be him self if he hadn't had at least one joke up his sleeve.

Mr. Sydney West had never seen it played. We got in consequence a new Mathias, and one more in the spirit of our own time. The great inan with a mystical madness, the Hamlet cum Lear figure, was re- placed by a very hunian and ter rible figure. West made Mathias a man not the figurehead of a dramatic tragedy. That he spoke boo quickly is the one fault to be found with a rendering which was remarkable in its power and intensity. There is, of course, no other good part in "The Bells," but the judge, memnerist and clerk, whom we believe to have been Sidney Elgar, Arthur Jeffreys, and. Theo Ingram, acquitted them- selves well. The stage was too small to allow the players in the first scene to do anything but speak their words. Mention should be made of the very effective staging and lighting of the trial scene..
