According to a Swatow report. the guston revenues collected by the Swatow Customs House during last month amounted to 351,448 tacls.

New York, August 2-After early firmness on the New York Stock Exchange to-day, heavy sell ingappeared with rails suffering the widest declines, says the daily review of the Dow Jones Financial. News Agency.
The Dow Jones average for 20 rails was off 1.13 for the day, to a level of 12.13. New York Central closed down 23 to 159; Pennsylvania was off 3 co. 711; Erie was down i to 384: Union Pacific declined two points to 212; Canadian Pacific was down 31 to 1703; and B. & O. was off 1 to 983.

A deal has been completed be- tween. Proctor and Gamble, the big American and Canadian soap com- bine, and Thomas Hedley and Co., the largest independent soap mau- facturing company ia Dcgland whereby the American company hquires a controlling interest in the century-old English concern.
The deal will give the Proctor and Camble Company a substantial interest in the soap trade in Eng land, and it is understood that with this opportunity at their command they intend to make great deve- lopments with Newcastle as the centre. of activities for the whole of the North and Scotland.
