An Atlantic fight is as much test of navigating instruments and their designers as it is a test off engines, human endurance, and human foresight. Miss Earhart's airplane flew blind" for twenty hours. Poor visibility was con- quered by a few scientific instru- ments. Had the latter failed, paly sheer good fortune would have saved the gallant trio.

LONDON, June 3rd. Miss Amelia Earhart, the first woman to fly the Atlantic, had a busy day yesterday. She placed wreaths on the Cenotaph and the Nurse Cavell atatue in the morn ing, visited Toynbee Hall, Com mercial-street, the centre of socia work in the East End of London, and then went on to Arcot.

Lieut. Wilmer Stulz, the pilot of the seaplane, and Mr. Louis Gor don, the mechanic, also placed wreaths on the Cenotaph, and afterwards did some sight-seeing in London. They had a look at the Nelson column, lunched at a famous Fleet-etreet restaurant, and then went on a tour of London.

History has it that the first aeronautical instrument was a piece of cloth tied to a stick. This served as an air speed in dicator. When the speed was low the cloth hung timp; as the speed increased, so the cloth fluttered When fights lengthened from fees into miles the instrument designer kept pace with the surprisingly rapid evolution of aeronautics.
