Tha typhoon came much

cloeg to Hong Kong to encourage golf over the week-end, and pre- sumibly Fanling was entirely de- serted. It would at any rate have nceded a real optimist to go out there. Deep Water Bay had a amall but faithful following even on Saturday, when one or two weird and wonderful costumes were to be seen on the course, but the sadden
never
vicious rainstorms were rather too much for most people. The wind at Deep Water Bay was really bad, though at times it was very guety. It altered the playing length of several of the holes, of course, but it
not violent enough to make the game farcical: It was left to the player to do that.
WDS
On Sunday too there was plenty of wind at times, but the Taip showers had greatly moderated from the previous day. The course had stood things surprisingly wel and the little standing water which was visible on Saturday had all disappeared. Naturally
does
not do much harm to a course the length of Deep Water Bay to have Tew added difficulties like wet and sudden unexpected ground gusts thrown in, and it certainly does no harm to
anyone to be
compelled now and then to at-
tempt to control a shot in a wind

that
One wonders why at Deep Water Bay the holes in almost every ense are cut so shallow. Possibly of course there is some perfectly simple explanation such as there is no depth of soil there, or is it that it is feared that the course may become
easy? 100 Whatever the reason, the holes are very shallow and consequently the edge of the tin is sunk only a very short way below the surface of the green. This is still further em- phasised by the carelessness of mast of the caddies who break the edge of the Eole and expose the tin even more, and the final result is that onc
more putts 8 right into the back of the hole and then jump out again than, thank goodness, one does on most other courses. If it is pomible this should be remedied. Granted that Deep Water Bay is not a course which was eve: intended for the most serious kind of golf, the rather frequent occurrence of this particular joke is not, I imagine, very widely appreciated. One does not mind occasional odd things happening through the green, the course is so small that this really adds a little variety to the round, but however light-hearted ope's golf may be, putting offers no fit occasion for more of the jests of Fortune than are necessary,.

as one enjoys playing any other shot in the game! There may be euch fortunate people presumably, but the ordinary man generally looks upon putting as a means to an end. There are days when he takes his putter without a tremor. other days when he almost bursts into tears when he sees his ball on the green, but how many ever feel a thrill of joy when they get Cer. the putter in their bands? tainly a long putt holed does, thri a man, but the thrill is one of mental relief, connected with the fact that one or possibly two shots have been saved. This is a very different feeling from the pure physical joy of a shot hit right off the middle of the cub with every ounce that one has behind it. A To long putt may give one a perfect "eagle," but it is the "eagle that one is pleased with and the two fine shots which led up to the putt, and in replaying that hole from the armchair throughout the evening, it is always the second To shot which, becomes more more magnified in opposition to the putt, until finally this crowning shot is reduced to a mere insign ficant fick with the back of the putter."

Happy Valley continues to be a very pleasant spot were the miss ing of more than about two shots a round should be regarded as a crime. The committee have turn: ed their attention to cleaning out que or two of the bunkers during the last week, which has certain improved the playing value of the course without in any way making it too easy. When they have had the time sad opportunity to dem with one or two of the tees the course will really be in very fine condition. The 8th tee is the only one which calls really loudly for attention. It is very uneven and far from level, and as this hole one which, more than most, calls for as lops a drive as posible t open up the green for the eccond shot, it is a little hard that the To player should be called upon to face rather unusual difficulties of stance and addrees when still on the tee.
