Kean interest marked the start of the Tennis League, organised by the Hong Kong Lawn Tennis Asso- ciation, on Saturday. As expected a heavy programme of matches' was carried through and while in many cases the winning Clubs won com fortably, some close matches result- ed.. Sever new Clubs made their debut in the League and met with varying success, but the number of matches played is an indication of the popularity of the game.

The Final was on the whole a duappointing affair. The man who really defeated Rumjabb was Rum jaba himself inasmuch as he tried to play the same waiting game as Honds though the latter was less likely to make o mistake than be At lawn tennis the day of going on returning the ball until your opponent hits it into the net or out is past, and the modern idea is to force the game and win your aces outright through your own not speed sad

and accuracy through the other fellow's mistakes From Honda's play in the pre vicus round it was obvious that Rumjahn's only chance was to take and maintain the offensive. in stead of that be played mostly on and, therefore, he the defensive lost. When he did try to attack, his court craft was often at fault: he would go up on short shots pitching only just over the service line and then was passed time and time again. Had he plugged away hard at Honda's back hand and 'gone up on deep drives to that

corner only he might have won.

Full" marks must on the other hand be given to Honda who play ed his own game like clockwork. Some of his forehand cross court drives were "peaches," and though he only came up to the net when he was compelled to, he scored a number of aces by well placed volleys. He deserved to win. He had, however, one bit of real fuck when he won the 4th game of the last act owing to two palpably. wrong decisions of the linesmen going against Rumjan,

That was a real bit of bad luck as the pair were clearly a tough proposition especially with their unusual forma tion of the left-hander in the right court. Their hard hitting, coupled with Lucas puzzling service and Kerce smashing, might well have proved too much for the Humjahna' steadiness.

in the only semi-final played Hancock's brifianco and Ng Ste Cheung's weakness were the main factors of the success of the British pair. Tottenham was very uncer- tain, but Ng Sze Kwong played a sterling game and had he taken charge more often the result might have been differcat.

The Final apart from the 1st and 4th sets was again some what dis appointing The first set was A great one with all four players hit- ting hard and accurately, and there were many excellent rallies which excited great enthusiasm. The re- sult was in doubt up to the last point. In the 2nd and are sets the stiledard of play fell dif and most ww points were won through mistakes rather than by brilliant shots. The fourth and last set was more excit- ing especially when Hancock and Tottenham made it 4 all after being 41 down, and again the result was in doubt up to the final point.

The features of the match were the Rumjahos" sccuracy and Totten- ham's steadiness and excellent ser vice. Hancock unfortunately was not nearly so good as in the ecmi- final but this no doubt, was partly due to the motor, accident in which he was involved two days previou Jy.
